Our primitive group campground is open year-around for organizations and nonprofit groups that want a more rugged camping experience. Reservations are required for use of this campground.
Designed by Architect Antonin Raymond, the shelter was constructed to compliment the community park in the 1940s. Now as a popular attraction in Mayo River State Park, it continues to serve its original intention as a gathering place for the community. The shelter is designed with open sides and a large fireplace on the interior front (firewood is not provided, gathering wood on the park is not permitted). There are several picnic tables inside the shelter and plenty of room for setting up events. Two large grills are available to the side of the shelter.
Mayo Mountain Access is 400 acres of a mix of hardwoods and pine. At this location there is no access to the Mayo River. You will have to visit other parts of the park up and down the Mayo River for access.
The shelter sits above the two park lakes and by one of the park dams. There is a fair amount of surrounding tree coverage as well as separate picnic tables and grills. The restroom are a short paved walk from the shelter and easily accessable. Up above the shelter is an open field and to the side of the shelter is the main trail access to Mayo Mountain.
There are trails, picnicing, and an open field for use at the Mayo Mountain Access.
The primitive group camp offers an open field for tents, a pit privy, fire ring, picnic tables and running water. The camp accomodates up to 40 people.
There are multiple park land parcels up and down the Mayo River. The Deshazo Mill and Anglin Mill accesses are each about a 20-minute drive from the park office, and both are accessible from Anglin Mill Road. The Hickory Creek access is located on Tyne Road, which is a 15-minute drive from the park office. Nearby to the park are 3 small, historic towns: Mayodan, Madison, and Stoneville.
